Description

The Botanic Gardens are 3km north of the city. They stretch over 19 acres and house nearly 20,000 different plant species. Conservation in very important to the Botanic Gardens. Amongst the 20,000 species the hold, there are 300 endangered species from around the globe and, amazingly, they care for six plants that are already extinct in the wild. The gardens were first opened in 1795 as Ireland’s first botanical garden. Its situated between the Tolka River and Glasnevin (Prospect) Cemetery. As well as a fin array of flora the gardens also have four fine Victorian glass houses – two of which won a Europa Nostra award for excellence in conservation architecture. The conservation 300 endangered plant species from around the world including 6 species, which are already extinct in the wild.
