"He entered Davy Byrne's. Moral pub. He doesn't chat. Stands a drink now and then. But in leap year once in four. Cashed a cheque for me once.
Nice quiet bar. Nice piece of wood in that counter. Nicely planed. Like the way it curves there"
James Joyce, Ulysses
This is a bar with a lot of pedigree. Mr Bloom, as he meandered through Dublin on June 16th 1904, stopped off there for a Gorgonzola Sandwich and a glass of Burgundy.
The Wooden counter no longer exists and the cheese sandwich and a glass of red is long gone. One has been replaced by a marble counter and the latter by a very good sea food menu. In the evening you can get your hands on some native rock oysters only to be accompanied by a round of brown bread and a pint of the black stuff. Magic.
