The establishment is firmly in the grasp of those who performed in the circus with the Celtic Tiger. It’s a modern bar in the classic sense in that it, nearly ashamedly, rid itself of any vestiges of its past. Before the interior designers go hold of the plans and someone else’s money it was a fairly “interesting” place to drink. None of the current patrons would know (or possibly care) that the premises was once one of the homes of James Joyce and family.
The original front door of the Joyce household was proudly displayed in the bar until the decorators arrived to paint the interior mainly black and white. The door, at least, was rescued and is now in the Joyce museum. The dignity of the previous bar, unfortunately, was not so lucky.
There is a good seating area outside, which gets particularly busy as the tills close on a Saturday.
