The Oak/Thomas ReadsThe Oak bar stood alone and was only keep company by a now defunct bar across the laneway called The Crain. But as the Tiger roared so did its appetite for food, drink and entertainment. Thomas Reads takes its name the cutler’s shop that had stood in Parliament Street since 1670. It was, until it closed in mid 90’s, the oldest surviving shop in Dublin. A publican bought the premises and named the group ‘The Thomas Read Group’. They opened a bar in an adjacent building and named it after the long standing cutler and also made an entrance for the new bar into the Oak.
The Oak is interest in that the interior is decorated in wood panelling with a definite ‘maritime’ motif complete with sea shells etc. It’s actually reclaimed out of the RMS Mauretania (1906) which was scrapped in 1935 and its contents sold at auction and the lovely wood panels were hung in a bar in Dame Street, Dublin. So What? Well two bits of trivia. Firstly, the Mauretania was a sister ship of the ill fated Lusitania and secondly she captured the Blue Riband in 1907 and held onto that Trans-Atlantic record for 22 years.
Panelling moves at a much slower pace now.
