Áras an Uachtaráin is the official residence of the President Of Ireland and has been since 1938. The house was originally the residence of the British Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. That position was left vacant after the Irish Civil war and the building had a variety of uses until it was a ‘temporary’ home of the first Irish president Douglas Hyde in 1938. War raged across Europe over the intervening seven years and it was decided in 1945 to make this the Presidents permanent residence.Historical Sites · Free guided tour of Áras an Uachtaráin every Saturday morning View details
