The building houses the National Parliament (the Dail). The original building was completed in 1747 and was occupied by James Fitzgerald, Earl of Kildare. He was later Duke of Leinster and building was renamed Leinster House. It was sold in 1815 to the Royal Dublin Society added to the original structure including a lecture hall which is now the Dáil chamber.
On the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1921 the new Free State government needed a venue for a parliament. Leinster House is now the seat of both houses of the National parliament: The Dáil and Seanad Éireann (a sort of lower and upper houses respectively).
