As religious structure has stood here since 1191 there is little of that remaining today.
The Cathedral, like the neighbouring Christ Church, has a tumultuous history. The cathedral has suffered fire, floods and the ultimate indignity of being used as a stable during the Cromwell campaign.
One of its more famous Deans, Jonathan Swift, presided over ceremonies here from 1713 to 1745. It was here that Swift penned many books, the most notable being Gulliver’s Travels. Swift was extremely benevolent using much of his money to restore the Cathedral and care of his less fortunate neighbours. He donated vast sums over the years to Dublin’s poor and, on his death, he instructed that his entire estate, including all royalties from his writings, was to be used to establish a hospital for the psychiatrically ill – St Patricks Hospital
A Choir and Grammar school was founded in 1432 and is still in operation today. The choir is very famous and prestigious and they can be heard any Sunday.
St Patricks Cathedral and the surrounding park are well worth a visit.
