Phoenix ParkThis park is one of the largest enclosed parks in Europe. It is 1,252 acres in total, surrounded by 11km of walls, has 22kms of roadways, 14km of cycle paths and 30 km of footpaths.
At one point it did stretch across the Liffey but when the Royal Hospital was being built it consumed the lands south of the river. It was originally a smaller Royal Deer Park, but over the years it expanded to its present size.
The herd of fallow deer that were introduced in 1662 are still present in the park today and can be seen congregating in large groups. For the health of the herd their numbers are kept to about 450.
Residents of the park have always been influential.
Irish President resides in Áras an Uachtaráin, The American Ambassador is the Presidents neighbour and, until 1978 the Papal Nuncio resided at Ashtown House.
