Awesome Tapes From Africa

On Saturday, April 18th, Hen’s Teeth is teaming up with Awesome Tapes From Africa for a pop-up record store by day and DJ set by night.  The pop-up kicks off at 2:30 pm with Cyriac Rec also on hand- no tickets needed. Doors open at 6 pm for the evening DJ set, running through to 12:30 am. Tickets for the evening are available here.

Since 2006, Brian Shimkovitz’s Awesome Tapes From Africa blog has been unearthing obscure sounds from across the continent. In 2011, it grew into a critically acclaimed label, re-releasing records by Ata Kak, Dur-Dur Band, Hailu Mergia and Penny Penny. As a DJ on twin tape decks, Brian blends folkloric pop, left-field disco and hip-hop into unmissable 2-3 hour sets.
