Nonesuch Records has just released Dark Matter, Randy Newman’s first album of new material in nine years. The record is the follow-up to 2008’s acclaimed Harps and Angels, which the Guardian praised for its “sumptuous melodies, devastating pathos and thorny, irony-laden character songs,” calling it, “the work of a true master of popular song.” Dark Matter was recorded in Los Angeles and produced by long-time Newman collaborators Mitchell Froom, Lenny Waronker, and David Boucher. The album’s nine songs include the 2016 digitally released “Putin,” plus songs about the Kennedy brothers, Sonny Boy Williamson, science vs. religion, love and loss, and more. Newman, who is known for writing from the perspective of various narrators, many of whom are unreliable, tried something new on Dark Matter: “If there is anything consistent about the songs, there is often more than one voice, in the big ones, and it’s different for me, a difficult thing to bring off, to make it comprehensible,” he says. “I think it works. They cover more ground than most songs do and portray a number of different characters. Audiences are smart. They’ll understand the songs. I hope they like them as well. “I’m proud of the record,” Newman continues. “I think it’s entertaining—I hope it’s entertaining—and that’s eighty percent of […]

Alabama 3 is a pop band, a punk rock, blues and country techno situationist crypto-Marxist-Leninist electro band. We never went on X Factor or Pop Idol or Stooge Quest. We did it the old fashioned way; Back in 1996, we threw a big old party, invited all our friends. We took a fistfull of blotters and half a dozen disco biscuits and then made it up as we went along. Geffen records bought it..! for a million dollars! We never needed a self-appointed quango of jaded vampires to tell us how to sing the blues, we got MOJO. We have the power to raise the dead. We spent half of our advance from Geffen on various contraband items and with the rest we made an over-produced, brilliant situationist masterpiece called Exile on Coldharbour Lane. Ever since then we’ve been preaching our Gospel all over the world. We’ve got into a whole bunch of trouble and met a whole bunch of nice people. We make friends where ever we go. They’ve tried to stop us. Many, many times. They say we were degenerates, corrupters of morals, they say we we were too political, too contrived, too ugly. We’ve been in and […]

Following the success of last year’s inaugural festival, IMC presents SPECTRUM 2018 with another diverse programme of music. SPECTRUM sits at the intersection where jazz and creative music collide, with focus on the live and the improvised. An exciting cornucopia of live acts, from spectral beats to full-on free jazz, electro tinged folk to Tuvan throat-singing will play across three Dublin venues on the weekend of 9th-11th March, namely DBD (under The Mezz), the Fumbally Stables and The Grand Social. FRIDAY starts off this year’s festival with an exciting double-header featuring two of the hottest acts on the UK jazz scene. Sons of Kemet are a rambunctious double-drumming quartet led by saxophonist/clarinettist Shabaka Hutchings. After a thrilling live show in Dublin in April 2016, they return for SPECTRUM with their heady, heavy and irresistible mix of jazz, rock, dub and Caribbean grooves. Joining SoK on the bill are Snowpoet, a London-based sextet led by Jazz FM Vocalist of the Year (2016) Lauren Kinsella and multi-instrumentalist Chris Hyson. Their eponymous debut Snowpoet garnered rave reviews and devoted audiences for their compelling sound, drawing comparisons with Bjork, and their 2nd album, Thought You Knew just out on Edition Records takes this musical […]

Fallon released his first solo record, Painkillers, in 2016. The album received widespread critical applause, with Entertainment Weekly acclaiming Fallon as “a first-rate songwriter with a dozen tunes that wax philosophical about love and the human condition – the dude’s like a modern-day Nietzsche with a sleeve tattoo.” (Fallon’s) version of the American Dream is tied not to anything abstract or political, but to songwriters like Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison,” wrote Consequence of Sound, “and in some ways Fallon’s version is even more effective than those of his forebears.” “It feels a little like a new morning,” raved Rolling Stone. “For a guy whose songs have always traded in the pains and pleasures of nostalgia, the Fallon of Painkillers seems to have arrived at a newfound, forward-looking clarity.” Brian Fallon will release a new solo album in 2018 on Island Records.
