Against the Waning Light — New Immersive Film by Artist Paul Murnaghan

Against the Waning Light, a new video work written and directed by artist Paul Murnaghan, will be screened at Meeting House Square, Dublin 2, on Thursday 19th March and Friday 20th March, running continuously between 7:30pm and 11pm each evening. The film which is 26 minutes in length is a FREE non-ticketed public screening – all are welcome.

Against the Waning Light features artist and World Champion freediver Nina McGowan, with choreography by Cindy Cummings and cinematography by Federico Buzzoni, best known for his work on the acclaimed documentary The Deepest Breath. Filmed largely in natural light, each underwater sequence was captured on a single breath.

The film unfolds without dialogue and explores Animism—the idea of the Earth as a sentient being. The camera follows a lone freediver descending deeper into the ocean, where she encounters something vast and ancient that leads her on a journey through landscapes untouched by human hands. Through this descent, the work attempts to shift perspective away from a purely human-centred view of existence.

The project is supported by The Arts Council and Dublin City Council.
