Irish Baroque Orchestra Dublin Handelfest 2022

JULY 15th – 17th

Presented in partnership with the Office of Public Works

Irish Baroque Orchestra is delighted to present Dublin HandelFest 2022 from Friday, July 15th to Sunday July 17th. IBO’s second annual festival is a celebration of Handel’s music and the composer’s close relationship with Dublin.

The opening concert of Dublin HandelFest 2022 on Friday, July 15th in St. Patrick’s Hall, Dublin Castle, reflects Dublin’s vibrant classical music scene in the first half of the 18th century when Handel came to Ireland. It presents two works inspired by Dublin landmarks: Cousser’s ‘The Applause of Mount Parnassus’, written for Dublin Castle in 1711, and Purcell’s ‘Great Parent Hail’, written for the centenary of Trinity College Dublin in 1694. The concert also celebrates Irish Baroque Orchestra’s new album ‘The Hibernian Muse’ featuring the two works.

Stuart Kinsella, Historian and Research Advisor at Christ Church Cathedral, invites people to join him on Saturday afternoon, July 16th, for an insightful walking tour of the theatres and music venues that were familiar to Handel during his time in the city, including Crow Street Musick Hall, Theatre Royal at Smock Alley, Aungier Street Theatre and Dublin Castle.

The Young Artists Showcase on Saturday evening spotlights the depth of young talent in historical performance that Ireland has to offer. Members of the IBO Apprentice Scheme 2022 perform a programme of music by Handel, Dowland, Locke and Purcell, charting the development of music in England from the Renaissance to Handel’s time.

Handel’s Italian Sketchbook for Messiah on Sunday afternoon, July 17th, explores the composer’s stunning early Italian duets with thematic links to Messiah. Also featured is the only surviving cantata by Philip Percival, Director of Irish State Music and responsible for the high standard of music at Dublin Castle in the early 18th century. He was a close friend of Handel.

For the closing concert of Dublin HandelFest 2022 on Sunday evening, July 17th, Irish Baroque Orchestra offers the audience an opportunity to hear ‘Messiah’ afresh in a scaled down version, performed in the intimate surroundings of the Chapel Royal at Dublin Castle. It features single strings and just 4 solo voices, and breathes new life into part one of this epic work.

To add to the festive occasion, trumpeters from Dublin HandelFest Trumpet Troupe, in partnership with the Royal Irish Academy of Music, perform fanfares in the courtyard of Dublin Castle on three occasions over the festival weekend.
