Since their last studio album, “Monterey” (ANTI- 2015), life has changed dramatically for The Milk Carton Kids. Pattengale has moved to, and is now producing records in Nashville. Ryan is now the father of two children and works as Creative Director on “Live from Here with Chris Thile,” the reboot of “A Prairie Home Companion.” A break from years of non-stop touring, Ryan says, has yielded “space outside of the band that gives us perspective on what the band is.” But it’s not just the addition of the band here that creates something new. National politics left Ryan feeling disoriented and mournful. Pattengale’s relationship of seven years ended, and he found himself unexpectedly needing surgery for cancer. (He is cancer-free now, and accidentally broke his cigarette habit in the process.)

At the end of May, Snow Patrol released Wildness, their first album in seven years. Wildness taps into something raw and primitive. Lead-singer and songwriter Gary Lightbody says of the album: “There are many types of wildness, but I think it can be distilled into two: the wildness of the modern age, all its confusion, illogic and alienation and a more ancient wildness. Something primal, alive and beautiful that speaks to our true connectivity, our passion, our love, our communion with nature and each other. This is the kind of wildness the album is centered around. The loss of it. Trying to reconnect with it. To remember it.” To celebrate the release of Wildness, Snow Patrol debuted new music videos for A Youth Written in Fire, Life and Death, Wild Horses and A Dark Switch. The band has previously released music videos for Empress, What If This Is All The Love You Ever Get?, Life on Earth and Don’t Give In.

Despite a 15 year break while frontman, Peter Garrett, became a minister in the Australian Government, last year’s world tour saw the Oils in the same incendiary form which made them one of the world’s most captivating live experiences during the 1980’s and 1990’s. Intensely political songs like “Beds Are Burning”, “Blue Sky Mining” and “Power & The Passion” took on even greater urgency in the age of Trump and Brexit leaving critics gushing across five continents.

Tidal Wave is Taking Back Sunday’s seventh album. While most of their peers have either broken up, faded away or reunited to capitalize on the emo scene’s wildfire revival, Taking Back Sunday have always been the Pearl Jam of the scene in the sense that they’ve consistently plugged along and continued to reinvent themselves regardless of what was trendy at the time. “By the time most bands get to this point in their career they are pretty set in what they do but we were really mindful about approaching our musical ideas differently this time around and staying true to where the five of us are in our lives right now,” frontman Adam Lazzara explains. “This album is truly an expression of what Taking Back Sunday is during this snapshot in time as opposed to what we think people expect from our band.”

Versatile is Eskimo Supreme and Casper Walsh, two inner city Dublin natives rhyming and visualising the humorous and grittier aspects of life as young run arounds. Tales are vividly told in their songs like stealing dogs as a means of income, to the bleak scenes of an after party, all the while maintaining their jovial manner. Since 2014 with the group’s first uploads to their highly subscribed YouTube channel, OUTBURST, they have organically found mass appeal throughout Ireland and beyond, creating a close to cultish following amongst their fans.

Walking On Cars are creating sounds as beautiful and dramatic as the landscape that envelops them. From the Dingle Peninsula, the five creatives friendship gave way to a tuneful collaboration, borne out of a desire to write music. With songs reflecting both the isolation and consolation of Dingle, this year Walking On Cars look set to add to their increasing number of admirers. Singer Patrick Sheehy is comfortable to characterize their music with the ambiguous description “powerful and almost pop”. Pushing the sound higher, Sorcha Durham (pianist) and Dan Devane (lead guitar) give life to these Melodic imaginings. Paul Flannery on Bass guitar and drummer Evan Hadnett provide an intelligent and bodily support to their carefully crafted songs. Central to the house that they share is the rehearsal space, where each of The five can document song ideas at anytime – “ an advantage” of their environment and something not possible living in a city.

Lana Del Rey is an American singer-songwriter born in 1986 in Lake Placid, New York. Her debut single, Video Games, launched her into the public eye in 2011, becoming a huge viral hit when the video she produced received over 20 million hits online. The album that followed, Born To Die, was one of the best-selling albums of the year worldwide and included top 10 hits such as Blue Jeans and Summertime Sadness. Del Rey’s musical influences range from Frank Sinatra and Elvis to Bob Dylan and Eminem, and her own style is one that is hard to pinpoint. With a jazzy voice and often cinematic, atmospheric music, she is at times reminiscent of Hollywood from the Golden Era, but this classic style is enthused with the modern beats of hip hop, giving Del Rey a unique and instantly recognisable style all of her own.

orn on St. Patrick’s Day and hailing from County Wicklow, Hozier was raised on the building blocks of popular music: rhythm and blues, soul, jazz and the deep dark stuff stretching from Chicago to the Delta. He joined his first band when he was 15 years old, fronting a soul band with some older heads. Hozier taught himself to play guitar and piano, and went to Trinity College to study music. However, four years looked like a long stretch, particularly when the goal was to write, record and perform his own music, so he dropped out to concentrate his talents on the creative process. Hozier’s first release was a four-track EP in 2014 that featured his five-time platinum hit Take Me to Church. He followed this up in 2016 with the single Cherry Wine, raising awareness of domestic violence. Following the release of Hozier’s Nina Cried Power EP earlier this month, he’ll be hitting the road this December for a string of new live UK shows.

A whole new audience discovered the thrill of seeing and hearing an orchestra in full flight and who better to introduce them than 2FM’s Jenny Greene with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, voted the World’s Favourite Orchestra in an international poll in 2015. They were the standout act of Electric Picnic 2016, blowing the roof off a mobbed Rankin’s Wood. During the rehearsal session, word went around Stradbally that something special was on the way and by the time of the performance the tent was packed, with queues of people outside desperate to get in. They topped the list for many as the highlight of the weekend.

Foals are a British-based indie rock band. Originally formed by Jack Bevan and Yannis Philippakis, the band’s trajectory has been remarkable. They’ve earned critical acclaim (NME and Q Award wins, plus Mercury Prize, Ivor Novello and BRIT Award nominations) and fan devotion (1.7 million sales of their four Gold-certified albums, plus over half a billion streams at Spotify since 2015) in equal measure. And while the majority of contemporaries have fallen by the wayside, Foals continue to hit new peaks. Seen as one of the best live acts in the UK, Foals have once again embraced that love for the unconventional with the bravest and most ambitious project of their career: not one, but two astonishing new albums: Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost.
