Waltons World Masters presents MAYA YOUSSEF National Concert Hall, John Field Room Wednesday, 15 August 2018 Tickets €25 from nch.ie ‘The act of playing music is the opposite of death, it’s a life- and hope-affirming act. To me, music is my own healer and an antidote to what’s happening, not only in Syria, but in the whole world. I like to think that my music brings people back to humanity and to their heart centres, where no harm can be done to any form of life and where all can exist together in peace.’ – Maya Youssef One day Maya Youssef, aged nine, was on her way to the Sulhi al-Wadi Institute of Music in Damascus, Syria, where she was reluctantly studying the violin. The taxi driver happened to be playing a recording of an instrument that blew her mind: the qanun. When she told him that she was determined to learn it, his response shocked her but kindled a flame: he laughed and said that girls simply did not play the qanun; it was a man’s instrument. Now, Maya Youssef is hailed as ‘queen of the qanun’, a traditional Syrian 78-stringed plucked zither. Except her influences go far beyond […]

Kasabian are an English rock band formed in Leicester in 1997. The band’s original members consisted of vocalist Tom Meighan, guitarist and vocalist Sergio Pizzorno, guitarist Chris Karloff, and bassist Chris Edwards. The band’s line-up was completed by drummer Ian Matthews in 2004 after a string of session drummers. Karloff left the band in 2006 and founded a new band called Black Onassis. Jay Mehler joined as touring lead guitarist in 2006. Mehler left the band for Liam Gallagher’s Beady Eye in 2013, to be replaced by Tim Carter. In 2010 and 2014, Kasabian won the Q Awards for ‘Best Act in the World Today’, while they were also named “Best Live Act” at the 2014 Q Awards and the 2007 NME Awards. The band’s music is often described as “indie rock”, but Pizzorno has said he “hates indie bands” and does not feel Kasabian fit into that category.

Walking On Cars are creating sounds as beautiful and dramatic as the landscape that envelops them. From the Dingle Peninsula, the five creatives friendship gave way to a tuneful collaboration, borne out of a desire to write music. With songs reflecting both the isolation and consolation of Dingle, this year Walking On Cars look set to add to their increasing number of admirers. Singer Patrick Sheehy is comfortable to characterize their music with the ambiguous description “powerful and almost pop”. Pushing the sound higher, Sorcha Durham (pianist) and Dan Devane (lead guitar) give life to these Melodic imaginings. Paul Flannery on Bass guitar and drummer Evan Hadnett provide an intelligent and bodily support to their carefully crafted songs. Central to the house that they share is the rehearsal space, where each of The five can document song ideas at anytime – “ an advantage” of their environment and something not possible living in a city. Since their formation just over 12 months ago, Walking on Cars have toured across the country with workmanlike dedication to their craft, developing their passion for playing live and with standout performances at many festivals in 2012.Walking On Cars are set to return to many […]
