To celebrate the 50th anniversary of man landing on the moon, the National Print Museum is delighted to announce two exhibitions. “To the Moon” is an exhibition, curated by Dr Ciaran Swan, that explores Ireland’s response to the man landing of the moon through print. Given the historical significance of the events of July 20th, 1969, a range of coverage was evident across the island. The front pages of national and regional newspapers, as well as the RTE Guide, give a flavour of the response. The Museum is also delighted to announce an exhibition of work by Year 2 BA [Hons] Illustration students of the National College of Art and Design entitled “A Letterpress Celebration of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the First Moon Landing”. The students worked with illustration Programme Leader Brendon Deacy and Jamie Murphy at Distillers Press to explore the fiftieth anniversary of man landing on the moon through the medium of letterpress. The students created a limited-editioned folio of prints on the theme of ‘the moon’. From Syrian scrolls written in the Second Century AD through to poetry composed by contemporaries, ‘the moon’ has been an inspiration throughout cultural history. The students are responding to selected prose with a […]
Irish Famine Exhibition The Irish Potato Famine was the most catastrophic event in Ireland’s turbulent history. It is also regarded as being one of the worst Famines in history (deaths as a proportion to population). The use of the word ‘Famine’ in this context is controversial, for Ireland at the time was part of the richest Empire in the World (the British Empire). There was sufficient food in the country throughout the ‘Famine’ years, yet over a million people died from starvation and disease, and millions more were forced to flee. Some historians prefer to use the name ‘Great Hunger’ to describe this period of mass death from starvation and disease. This exhibition tells the story of what happened during those horrific years. We use rare 19th century photographs, witness accounts, contemporary sketches as well as maps and statistical information. A 15 minute film with seating is included in the exhibition and the average time spent by visitors is 1 hour. A DVD of the exhibition can also be purchased at the venue. This exhibition is dedicated to all victims of the Irish Potato Famine or The Great Hunger. Please go to Irish Famine Museum for more information

This year we bid a fond farewell to our Chairperson and musical guide over the past 18 years, Mary Keane, as she retires from the festival committee. Mary has been the visionary in creating the Skerries Trad Weekend which started out in May 2001 as an intimate celebration of the best in traditional Irish music in Ireland. She then guided and nurtured the concept of the weekend from those humble beginnings right through to the renowned festival it is today while simultaneously planting Skerries firmly on the trad map of Ireland. The STW committee, both current and past, would like to extend our sincere thanks to Mary for her magnanimous dedication, experience and love of traditional Irish music, song and dance which she has brought not only to Skerries but indeed has passed on to everyone who has encountered her on her determined musical journey over the past two festival decades in reviving trad in Skerries, bringing top class performers to the town and passing on the tradition to the next generations. Unfortunately, there is no replacement for Mary Keane and all the behind-the-scenes work she accomplished over the years! Therefore, as the new committee finds its feet, the 2019 […]

She world could use more straight shooters. You won’t ever have to wonder about what LP is thinking. She’ll gladly tell you. In fact, the singer-songwriter lays all of her cards on the table every time she makes a record. The artist’s fifth full-length—the aptly titled Heart To Mouth [BMG/Vagrant]—stands out as her most direct statement yet. No filter, no censorship, and no bullshit – and she’s bringing it to The Olympia Theatre on the 21st May 2019!

OH SEES THE BUTTON FACTORY 21st May 2019 Tickets on sale now Aiken Promotions and U:Mack proudly presents Oh Sees live at The Button Factory, 21st May 2019. Tickets on sale now! Oh Sees have spawned another frothy LP of head-destroying psych epics to grok and rock out to. You’ll notice the fresh dollop of organ and keyboard prowess courtesy of “Memory of a Cut Off Head” album and noted key-stabber Tom Dolas…the Quattrone/Rincon drum-corps polyrhythmic pulse continues to astound and pound in equal measure, buttressed by the nimble fingered bottom end of Sir Tim Hellman the Brave and the shred-heaven fret frying of John Dwyer, whilst Lady Brigid Dawson again graces the wax with her harmonic gifts. Aside from the familiar psych- scorch familiar to soggy pit denizens the world over, there’s a fresh heavy-prog vibe that fits like a worn-in jean jacket comfortably among hairpin metal turns and the familiar but no less horns-worthy guitar fireworks Dwyer’s made his calling card. Perhaps the most notable thing about Smote Reverser is the artistic restlessness underpinning its flights of fancy. Dwyer refuses to repeat himself and for someone with such a hectic release schedule, that stretching of aesthetic borders and […]

Smashing Times: A Creative Celebration of the Centenary Vote for Women uses creative processes of theatre, film and online digital resources to explore the centenary vote for women in 2018, and reflects on the experiences of women today in relation to gender equality, human rights and diversity. The lead artist is Mary Moynihan, theatre and film artist, and Artistic Director of Smashing Times. Using creative processes and a feminist framework, the project brings artists, activist and local communities together to celebrate the centenary vote for women. The project begins with a process of research and identifies five positive stories of change experienced by pioneering women who fought for the vote in 1918, and five positive stories of change experienced by women today including women living in the Grangegorman area. The 10 stories are used to create a theatre workshop model and online exhibition and to inform the creation of a short film, all of which are then offered to the public to bring citizens, artists and activists together to explore the kind of Ireland we want for the future in relation to gender equality, exploring key questions such as ‘What does the vote mean to you?’ and ‘What can we do […]
Walking On Cars are creating sounds as beautiful and dramatic as the landscape that envelops them. From the Dingle Peninsula, the five creatives friendship gave way to a tuneful collaboration, borne out of a desire to write music. With songs reflecting both the isolation and consolation of Dingle, this year Walking On Cars look set to add to their increasing number of admirers. Singer Patrick Sheehy is comfortable to characterize their music with the ambiguous description “powerful and almost pop”. Pushing the sound higher, Sorcha Durham (pianist) and Dan Devane (lead guitar) give life to these Melodic imaginings. Paul Flannery on Bass guitar and drummer Evan Hadnett provide an intelligent and bodily support to their carefully crafted songs. Central to the house that they share is the rehearsal space, where each of The five can document song ideas at anytime – “ an advantage” of their environment and something not possible living in a city.
Grace Gifford hailing from a Dublin middle-class Unionist background falls in love with leading Irish revolutionary Joseph Plunkett. Both agree to marry on Easter Sunday 1916 but a rising against British Rule in Ireland has been planned for that very day. Plunkett is vital to the revolutionaries plans as he is the military director of operations. Grace while sympathising with his cause prefers to wait until the outcome of the rising before giving her hand in marriage. In some of the most incredible scenes ever staged, the rising is defeated and Plunkett along with his comrades are sentenced to death by execution shortly afterwards in Kilmainham Gaol. Grace and Joseph plead to marry in the small chapel in the prison that very night. Their wish is granted and after exchanging wedding vows in the dark damp confines of the prison chapel, Plunkett is taken out the next morning and executed. Their tragic love story to this very day has found a place in the nation’s heart. Set against the background of the Easter Rising 1916, Cunningham in his well-researched writing introduces us to the lesser known internal difficulties within the Irish Volunteers. Eoin McNeil, leader of the Volunteers struggles to […]

Citysong is a play. It’s a poem. It’s a chorus of voices showing us three generations of a Dublin family on one day, and it turns out one day holds the entire past. There are teen discos, late night taxis, home nurses, Jewish launderettes, vigilantes, babies, immigrants, seagulls. It’s intimate and sweeping, it’s cerebral and compassionate, it’s joyous and ridiculous. It’s modern day Dublin’s Under Milk Wood via Metamorphoses. (Not the book about the cockroach.) It’s different things at different times, which makes sense seeing as it’s about change.

Since their last studio album, “Monterey” (ANTI- 2015), life has changed dramatically for The Milk Carton Kids. Pattengale has moved to, and is now producing records in Nashville. Ryan is now the father of two children and works as Creative Director on “Live from Here with Chris Thile,” the reboot of “A Prairie Home Companion.” A break from years of non-stop touring, Ryan says, has yielded “space outside of the band that gives us perspective on what the band is.” But it’s not just the addition of the band here that creates something new. National politics left Ryan feeling disoriented and mournful. Pattengale’s relationship of seven years ended, and he found himself unexpectedly needing surgery for cancer. (He is cancer-free now, and accidentally broke his cigarette habit in the process.)
