IMMA Collection: Freud Project is a major five-year initiative for IMMA, where fifty-two works by painter Lucian Freud (1922-2011) have been lent to the museum’s Collection by private lenders. During this unique project, IMMA will present a series of Freud-related exhibitions each year. The third exhibition in the series, Gaze, continues to actively explore Freud’s practice by positioning other works from the IMMA Collection alongside selected works by Freud. As the title suggests, the exhibition is concerned with a human gaze; of the artist, the sitter or the viewer of the work. Gaze particularly asks us to examine relationships between the artist and the sitter, and also focuses on the representation of the nude and the oftentimes visceral portrayal of the body in art, particularly in Freud’s work. Unfolding over a series of three floors in the dedicated Freud Centre, the exhibition encourages the visitor to journey from room to room, allowing space for reflection, but always considering who is gazing at whom. At times you are sharing the viewpoint of the sitter, at times the artist, but you are always involved in a constant exchange between all three perspectives in the room; the viewer, artist and sitter Showing alongside […]
This loan exhibition presents a selection of the finest eighteenth-century Venetian works from the UK’s Royal Collection. Paintings, drawings and prints by Canaletto will be shown alongside groups of paintings and drawings by his contemporaries, including Sebastiano and Marco Ricci, Francesco Zuccarelli, and Giovanni Battista piazzetta. Most of these works were acquired by George III directly from Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice, who was a passionate collector, dealer and supporter of Venetian artists and Canaletto’s most enthusiastic patron. As well as offering superb examples of eighteenth century Venetian art, the exhibition gives a fascinating insight into the social circles and artistic networks of the period. The exhibition will be complemented by two publications: a full-length 400-page hardback catalogue and a mini-booklet featuring selected highlights.
Temple Bar Gallery + Studios is pleased to present Efference Copy Mechanism, a large-scale installation by Ronan McCrea. The exhibition comprises a complex arrangement of superimposed slide and 16mm film projections that draw on the artist’s personal archive and accumulated image bank, continuing his ongoing exploration of celluloid materiality, appropriated and found images, instructional film and pedagogy, reproduction and indexicality. The darkened gallery space is divided by a line of steel archive storage shelves. From within this structure – at once functional and symbolic – an array of signals, control boxes, cables, looping mechanisms and projectors orchestrate the combination of images onto the surrounding walls. This spine-like structure is a key to the exhibition’s title. In neurological terms an efference is a motor signal from the central nervous system to the periphery. A copy of this signal – an efference copy – is created as the signal exits the brain and is re-routed to other areas of the sensory cortex, thus explaining our perception of stability despite constant eye movement, and how sensory signals generated from external stimuli can be distinguished from signals resulting from one’s own actions. Efference Copy Mechanism acts as a metaphor and framework for the artist’s thinking on his […]
All of Edna O’Brien’s novels published during the 1960s were ruled “indecent and obscene” under the Censorship of Publications Act. This started when the publication of The Country Girls caused outrage. It was banned in Ireland by the authorities and publicly burned by the clergy. Notoriety quickly turned to fame and this coming of age story of two young women in 1950s Ireland became a best-seller.

The Irish Society for the Study of Children’s Literature 2019 conference explores the theme of ‘Young People’s Radical Literature and Culture’. The keynote address will be given Professor Kimberley Reynolds of Newcastle University. The conference will occur during Friday 29th and Saturday 30th March 2019 in the Marino Institute of Education, Dublin 9, Ireland. You can view the programme and register for the conference at https://issclblog.wordpress.com/. It is now over ten years since Kimberley Reynolds highlighted the importance of radical dimensions of children’s literature inher book, Radical Children’s Literature: Future Visions and Aesthetic Transformations in Juvenile Fiction. Texts for young people have always been embedded in norms, concepts and systems regarding socialisation, education, and enculturation and offer empowering and disempowering possibilities for everyone who engages with them. Concepts of childhood, youth literature and youth culture are situated and operate within diverse contexts and contested spaces which are negotiated by readers, audiences, publishers, creative industries, authors, librarians, teachers, families, gate keepers, institutions, cultural movements, and political and religious groups. Radical youth literature challenges dominant expectations and norms about childhood, society, socialisation, and young people’s reading, acts as a force for change and encourages children and young adults to question the authority of those in power. Following the release of his brand-new album Love is Magic, John Grant comes to Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in 2019. “Each record I make is more of an amalgamation of who I am,” says John Grant. “The more I do this, the more I trust myself, and the closer I get to making what I imagine in my head.” Even when the Michigan-born man released his debut solo album Queen Of Denmark in 2010, Grant laced sumptuous soft-rock ballads with an array of spacey, wistful synthesizer sounds, increasingly adding taut, fizzing sequencers, nu-synth-disco settings and icy soundscapes to the mix on 2013’s Pale Green Ghosts and 2015’s Grey Tickles, Black Pressure. Now, with his fourth solo album Love Is Magic, Grant continues to evolve, creating his most electronic record yet, in collaboration with Benge (Ben Edwards), analogue synth expert/collector and a member of electronic trio Wrangler, Grant’s collaborators earlier this year under the collective name of Creep Show on the album Mr Dynamite. Produced by Grant (together with Benge and Paul Alexander), and engineered by Benge at his Cornish studio, the diamond-hard, diamond-gleaming Love Is Magic, “is closer still to how I’ve always wanted my records to sound, but I […]

Dublin: One City, One Book is an award-winning Dublin City Council initiative, led by Dublin City Public Libraries, which encourages everyone to read a book connected with the capital city during the month of April every year. The book selected for 2019 is : The Country Girls Trilogy When The Country Girls, Edna O’Brien’s first novel, appeared in 1960, it predated and anticipated the feminist revolution. It stood out and stood alone, upturning every category. There was little to compare with it. The Country Girls grew over time to what we now know as The Country Girls Trilogy, encompassing the title volume, a second novel Girl with Green Eyes, published in 1962, and Girls in Their Married Bliss, published in 1964. It is given to few to write their most important works early on. Quite simply, The Country Girls is a twentieth-century literary masterpiece which anticipates and puts into effect a feminist revolution all of its own. It tells the story of two young girls from Country Clare, Cait Brady and Baba Brennan, and tracks them from childhood through the vicissitudes of adolescence, marriage, emigration to Dublin and then to London and the terrible reckonings of adult life. Cait, the […]

When James Morrison broke onto the scene as a soulful singer-songwriter in 2006 even he couldn’t have predicted that he would become the template that allowed a wave of likeminded musicians to enter the field. Now, almost ten years on, Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, George Ezra and James Bay are all crowding the charts, following the same format; one guy with a great, soulful voice and a guitar. They’ve all cited him as an influence but does Morrison take some credit for paving the way? “I don’t really see it like that, I was just lucky to be one of the first”.
Dublin Will Show You How is a provocative play that offers a gut-wrenching glimpse into the intimidation and isolation of women living in the culture of coercion and crime. It speaks of oppression and ultimately women’s ostracisation, where you cannot leave your home for fear of hearing or seeing something you shouldn’t, or being implicated in somebody else’s business. It is based in the north inner city of Dublin but it is about women everywhere and their survival.

One of the most talked-about shows of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2018 arrives fresh from a sold-out festival run. Jay is the American Oscar-winning actor leading a new play that connects with his Irish roots. Leigh is the English director who will do anything to get noticed. And Ruth is the Northern Irish playwright whose voice must be heard. The stage is set for success but when they meet to discuss the play’s challenges and provocations a line is crossed, and their heated discussion quickly escalates into violence. Exploring abuses of power, the confusion of cultural identity and the silencing of the female voice, Ulster American is confrontational and brutally funny – not for the faint of heart, and not to be missed.

SWEENEY LIVES! Frank Corcoran (IE) Programme: Frank Corcoran, Quasi una Missa (19’40”) 1999 Frank Corcoran, Tradurre Tradire (24’13”) 2004 Frank Corcoran, Sweeney’s Vision (20’39”) 1997 Three of Frank Corcoran’s ‘tape’ music masterworks are presented here for the first time in surround sound and as a complete body of work in a single concert. Each of these works reveal Corcoran’s far-reaching vision of a distant, multi-layered, mythic past which is rendered so deftly here in late 20th century technology. Written in the years spanning the peak of Corcoran’s creative output, these pieces are in a consciously radiophonic style and, when heard together in a seamless concert performance, they accumulate a coherence and forcefulness of argument and bring to life Corcoran’s mythological landscape, littered with visual metaphors, in a true ‘cinema for the ear’.
