Irish Famine Exhibition The Irish Potato Famine was the most catastrophic event in Ireland’s turbulent history. It is also regarded as being one of the worst Famines in history (deaths as a proportion to population). The use of the word ‘Famine’ in this context is controversial, for Ireland at the time was part of the richest Empire in the World (the British Empire). There was sufficient food in the country throughout the ‘Famine’ years, yet over a million people died from starvation and disease, and millions more were forced to flee. Some historians prefer to use the name ‘Great Hunger’ to describe this period of mass death from starvation and disease. This exhibition tells the story of what happened during those horrific years. We use rare 19th century photographs, witness accounts, contemporary sketches as well as maps and statistical information. A 15 minute film with seating is included in the exhibition and the average time spent by visitors is 1 hour. A DVD of the exhibition can also be purchased at the venue. This exhibition is dedicated to all victims of the Irish Potato Famine or The Great Hunger. Please go to Irish Famine Museum for more information

For the past four years, Alcázar-Duarte has been working on a project related to current efforts towards space exploration. The resulting body of work will be open to the public at Instituto Cervantes Dublin and it is divided into three chapters: two of them have been completed, with the third in development. The first two chapters are called The New Colonists and Ascension. The work delves into the beginning of an era of technological prodigy. It encourages us to look to the far future with eyes wide open, as there is an imperious need to resolve current legal loopholes regarding space exploration for it to proceed in a peaceful and balanced way. The installation of the work, that takes part in PhotoIreland 2019 programming, includes an Augmented Reality component that works as a virtual portal to add an extra layer to the overall narrative presented. Monica Alcázar-Duarte is a Mexican photographer, currently based in the UK, whose work engages with the way we read and integrate images and information, at a time when information and its context changes at such a rapid pace. Her work examines the relationship between context, interconnection and conclusion. It draws attention to how much we all need to […]

Jenny Lewis had her first taste of stardom when she was a child, appearing in a series of television shows and films and later forming the indie rock band Rilo Kiley with Blake Sennett in 1998. Her work with Rilo Kiley drew upon the seediness of her native San Fernando Valley and nearby Hollywood, but she began to expand her horizons when she released a country-tinged solo debut called Rabbit Fur Coat in 2006. Rabbit Fur Coat established Lewis as a formidable singer/songwriter in her own right, and her reputation only grew after the group split, thanks to the rustic Americana of 2008’s Acid Tongue and the slick pop sheen of 2014’s The Voyager. Having ended 2018 on a high note with the announcement of her fourth solo album On The Line—to be released March 22nd on Warner Bros. Records—Jenny Lewis has now unleashed the first taste of her highly anticipated return with the first single, “Red Bull & Hennessy,” now available as an instant grat via pre-order and on all digital/streaming platforms here. Accompanying the single’s release is a visualizer, which can be viewed HERE As the excitement surrounding the release of On The Line ramps up, the album […]

Stiff Little Fingers were formed in 1977 in Belfast. Along with the likes of the Clash, Sex Pistols, The Jam, Buzzcocks, Undertones, Sham 69, Stranglers, et al – Stiff Little Fingers were at the forefront of the punk movement. They wrote initially about their own lives, growing up at the height of The Troubles in Northern Ireland, in songs like Suspect Device and Wasted Life. In November of ’77, they released those two songs on their own Rigid Digits label, and sent a copy to BBC Radio One DJ John Peel, who started playing it every night. These were the first of what became SLF’s signature style: lyrics that meld the personal and political, music that combines the energy of punk with infectious hooks, and delivery that rings of honesty and commitment. In 1979 they became the first band ever to hit the UK top 20 album charts on an independent label with their debut Inflammable Material. The album chronicles the band’s anger and frustration at “the Troubles” in Northern Ireland, and calls on youth to create their own reality.

Following recording stints in New York and Berlin (where he now calls home), Condon settled in Sudestudio, a studio complex deep in rural Puglia, southern Italy. It was here that he rediscovered the old joys of music as a visceral experience which became the founding principle for Gallipoli.

September 9th to 14th. Bord Gais Theatre/ €21+ In a major musical adaptation, Frank McCourt’s memoir ANGELA’S ASHES returns to the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre stage in an emotional telling of a childhood in Limerick and beyond, featuring unforgettable songs and melodies, told with a rare lyricism and a warm inimitable sense of humour. As his parents struggle to provide for him and his brothers in 1940s Ireland, we follow young Frank’s escapades and experiences in a Dickensian landscape peopled by a drunken father, a helpless mother, pompous priests, bullying schoolmasters, money-lenders and dancing-teachers, culminating in his defiant escape to a new life in America. A haunting score adds to the emotional impact and the humour of the story.
