Irish Famine Exhibition The Irish Potato Famine was the most catastrophic event in Ireland’s turbulent history. It is also regarded as being one of the worst Famines in history (deaths as a proportion to population). The use of the word ‘Famine’ in this context is controversial, for Ireland at the time was part of the richest Empire in the World (the British Empire). There was sufficient food in the country throughout the ‘Famine’ years, yet over a million people died from starvation and disease, and millions more were forced to flee. Some historians prefer to use the name ‘Great Hunger’ to describe this period of mass death from starvation and disease. This exhibition tells the story of what happened during those horrific years. We use rare 19th century photographs, witness accounts, contemporary sketches as well as maps and statistical information. A 15 minute film with seating is included in the exhibition and the average time spent by visitors is 1 hour. A DVD of the exhibition can also be purchased at the venue. Educating Rita is a well-loved comedy by Willy Russell which was made famous by the popular 1983 film starring Michael Caine and Julie Walters. Rita is a brash, working-class hairdresser on a personal quest to educate herself for a better life. When she enrols in an Open University course she is paired with Frank, a burned-out, disillusioned professor who has become somewhat reliant on a bottle of scotch to get him through the day. Through a series of both hilarious and moving conversations, an unlikely friendship grows, with each one helping the other to rediscover their zest for life. Having charmed Dublin audiences as Eliza Dolittle and Henry Higgins in ‘My Fair Lady’ at the Gaiety Theatre over a decade ago, actors Róisín Sullivan and Garry Mountaine reunite to present this alternative Pygmalion-inspired play; once again teaming up to interpret the characters of the knowledgeable professor and his unlikely protégé.

Rodrigo y Gabriela is a duo from Mexico City who specializes in playing fast, rhythmic acoustic guitar.They return to the Olympia after a very successful show in April. They will be appearing on September 19th 2019 Their unique sound, strongly influenced by Latin rhythms and harmonies, straddles both world and rock, and includes covers of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” and Metallica’s “Orion”. After meeting in a trash metal band, the two grew tired of the domestic scene and decided to move to Dublin. After busking in Copenhagen and Barcelona for a few years, they got their break in 2005 when asked to tour the UK with Damien Rice, a former busking buddy. Their self-titled debut album, produced by John Leckie, was released shortly after, and entered the Irish Albums Chart as number one – beating both Arctic Monkeys and Johnny Cash.

Leopardstown Farmers Market is an old style food market with an excellent craft and modern jewellery section.
